PRESS RELEASE
Visa Marks 20 Years of Growth and Innovation in Nepal

Over 147mn transactions totaling US$12.7bn processed through Visa network

Kathmandu, 19 June 2017 – Visa, the global leader in payments technology, is this month celebrating two decades of operating in Nepal. Since the first Visa card was launched in 1997, Visa has led Nepal’s transition from magnetic stripe cards to EMV chip technology, powering the country’s adoption of digital payments.

Over this period, Visa has processed over 147 million transactions totaling US$12.7 billion across Nepal, in the process growing its card base to nearly 3 million Visa cards in the market .

Commenting on the milestone, TR Ramachandran, Visa’s Group Country Manager, India & South Asia said, “Nepal is one of our key growth markets. With an increased focus on electronification of payments and the eCommerce industry booming in the foreground, Nepal is taking rapid strides towards new age banking.” He further added, “In 2017 alone, we have managed to grow our transactions by over 42%, our payment volumes by over 35% while managing a 22% growth in issuance of new cards. We will continue to accelerate this progression by deepening our partnerships in Nepal and leveraging our global payments network to introduce new innovative payment solutions in the country.”

In Nepal, Visa is associated with leading financial institutions and merchants across the country, offering consumers the choice of using their Visa products across over 6000 point of sale outlets and numerous online platforms. As part of its growth plans, Visa continues to invest in the development of the acceptance infrastructure that would stimulate the adoption of digital payments in the country.

Visa’s pioneering efforts over the past two decades have played a pivotal role in helping a traditional cash based economy such as Nepal gradually transition towards a digital payments ecosystem. The rapid penetration of eCommerce and mobile technology is further complementing this change.

At the core of this expansion has been Visa’s relentless focus on creating a secure environment that fosters growth of digital payment systems in Nepal. Towards this end, Visa has been instrumental in helping form the Card Industry Council of Nepal (CICN), a council formally recognized by the Nepal Bankers Association. CICN currently comprises of Nepal’s leading banks and is mandated with suggesting appropriate rules and regulations, sharing information across banks and managing fraud levels across the industry.

The World Bank expects the Nepal economy to grow at a healthy 5.6% during 2017 with robust recovery of key sectors. This combined with the proactive approach by the country’s central bank, Nepal Rastra Bank is widely expected to further propel the country’s move towards a less cash economy. Visa expects to play a key role in this transition over the next few years as it has been over the past 20.

For Immediate Release

UNFPA and IPPF to partner in providing Sexual and Reproductive Health services to earthquake affected women and girls in Nepal

May 06, 2015: New Delhi/ Kathmandu/ London:

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) have entered into a partnership to ensure that the need for sexual and reproductive health care of young girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers in Nepal is urgently met in the wake of the devastating April 25 earthquake.

An estimated two million women of reproductive age have been affected by the disaster. Of these, there are about 126,000 currently pregnant women who are in urgent need of clean delivery and reproductive health kits. About 2,100 women may suffer from obstetric complications over the next month alone. UNFPA estimates put about 40,000 women of reproductive age – including those at camps for the displaced — at increased risk of sexual violence.

UNFPA has pledged support to IPPF’s Member Association, the Family Planning Association of Nepal (FPAN), to expand and strengthen mobile medical camps. Safe delivery and reproductive health kits, as well as dignity kits which contain essentials including sanitary pads, have also been provided by UNFPA through IPPF to FPAN for women of reproductive age.

UNFPA and IPPF through its SPRINT initiative and FPAN are organising mobile medical camps in affected areas to provide critical sexual and reproductive health services (SRH) along with general health services. So far, IPPF through its SPRINT initiative along with FPAN volunteers and staff have mobilised three mobile teams and one referral unit. These mobile teams have, as of this writing, served more than 1,400 persons in need by providing counselling, consultation examination by doctor and medicines. This has been done through ten different locations in some of the hardest-hit areas, including Bhaktapur, Kavre, Lalitpur, Sindhupalchowk and Kathmandu districts.

”Pregnant women and new mothers are often ignored in the aftermath of a disaster, but they are among the most vulnerable and at risk populations,” noted Giulia Vallese, UNFPA Representative in Nepal. “UNFPA is grateful to IPPF and FPAN for this partnership, for it is through our implementing partners on the ground that our lifesaving interventions reach those who need them the most.”

“We welcome the partnership with UNFPA which will strengthen our efforts to provide critical sexual and reproductive care and services in a timely and effective manner. Our endeavour is to reach people with specialised needs especially pregnant women who are in dire need of emergency care. Our Member Association, Family Planning Association of Nepal, has rallied around its staff and resources to respond to this emergency,” said Anjali Sen, Regional Director, IPPF, South Asia Region.

“IPPF through its SPRINT initiative is implementing the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Reproductive Health to ensure that no one is left behind in receiving the care they need,” says Aditi Ghosh, IPPF’s Global Emergency Response Manager, SPRINT and field coordinator, Nepal Emergency Response.

“At the mobile medical camps, while providing general healthcare and services, we have in just the early days of this crisis evacuated and referred sixteen women in various stages of pregnancy needing emergency obstetric care to different referral sites including the Israeli medical camp,” said Dr. Abhijeet, Pathak, Programme Specialist – Medical and Abortion, IPPF SARO, overseeing the coordination of the mobile medical camps.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake has claimed more than 7,000 lives, and over 14,000 people have been injured, many seriously. The impending monsoon is compounding fears of further devastation among the affected population. The need for crucial lifesaving medical care, including sexual and reproductive health and services, will continue well into the future. Specialised healthcare needs of pregnant women and lactating mothers, provision for safe delivery, protecting girls from unintended pregnancies, and menstrual hygiene for young girls remain serious issues that the UNFPA-IPPF/FPAN partnership will continue to address.

“So many parts of the country are devastated and it’s encouraging to see that the affected communities themselves want to participate in the response – we must engage women, girls and young people in the services we’re providing”, said Priya Marwah, Humanitarian Response Coordinator from UNFPA’s Asia Pacific Regional Office.

More than a third of maternal deaths worldwide occur in crisis settings due to lack of access to basic emergency-obstetric services and availability of skilled service providers. This leads to high maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality which, however, with timely and appropriate interventions such as those provided by UNFPA, IPPF/FPAN and other partners are preventable. UNFPA and IPPF/FPAN pledge to support the Government and people of Nepal now and in the future.

Escorts, India’s leading tractor brand, today announced the Nepal launch of its two new series of tractors, the most powerful offerings in their respective categories. While the new FARMTRAC 6060 and 6065, in 60HP and 65 HP segment respectively are positioned in the high-end, premium tractor category; the new POWERTRAC Diesel-Saver Plus tractor series, available in 37 to 45 HP range, is placed in the mid-size, popular segment.

The Farmtrac 6060 and 6065 tractors are designed to cater to the progressive new- age Nepal farmer, who are smart, educated with an entrepreneurial bent of mind. They look for machines which are high on technology offering unbeatable power. Farmtrac 6060 and 6065 come with a new four-cylinder turbocharged, intercooled engine that delivers higher torque to run larger implements and pull heavier loads. These tractors perform bigger tasks in the least amount of time. The new Powertrac ‘DIESEL-SAVER PLUS’ tractor series, with a 10% power upgrade across its range, caters to the emerging ‘commerce-minded’ farmers, who use their tractors not just for regular farm work but also as a source of generating additional income. These tractors have new, bigger engines that not only provide state-of-the-art fuel-saving technologies, but also best-in-class power ratings.

Speaking at the launch Mr Shenu Agarwal, Head of Marketing, Escorts Agri Machinery said, “Today, tractor usage is changing rapidly. On one side, shortage of labour has spurred farm mechanization, and on the other, tractors are increasingly being used for heavy-duty, non-farming applications. Farmers are therefore becoming more entrepreneurial with a commerce oriented mindset. They need more power to be able to do more work with their tractors, and higher mileage to be able to save costs. Both the new Farmtrac and the Powertrac series of tractors have achieved this technology feat of combining maximum power with the best-in-class fuel mileage.”

Added Mr. Sameer Tandon, Head of Sales, Service & Spare Parts, Escorts Agri Machinery, “Nepal is a high potential market for us. With the new products being launched today, we aim to revolutionalise the tractor market in the country. Going ahead, we will bring more products to the country that suit the local emerging needs, and will further strengthen our sales and service network to make sure that the benefits of these products are effectively delivered to our customer base.”

‘Nepal’s Organ Trail: A CNN Freedom Project Documentary’ highlights the brutal and exploitative organ trade in Nepal which sees the trafficking of impoverished and ignorant villagers as unwitting kidney donors. CNN International Correspondent Sumnima Udas investigates the plight of these trafficked victims who live with severe health complications and the threat of premature death looms large, pushing their impoverished families further into the cycle of poverty and exploitation.“Organ trafficking is a barbaric trade that destroys the lives of not just an individual, but the entire family,” said Tony Maddox, Executive Vice President and Managing Director for CNN International. “This was a story that needed to be told, and we are dedicating ourselves to highlight this inhuman practice so a change can be brought about.”The documentary follows the organ trail which begins from the villages of the remote Kavre district in Nepal where villagers are trafficked on pretexts ranging from false job offers to promises of large sums of money for a ‘chunk’ of their body which they are told will ‘grow back’. At the other end of the trail, ailing and desperate patients await kidney transplants which could potentially save their lives. A perfect storm of poverty, desperation and loopholes in the government machinery allow traffickers to continue this exploitative cycle and make handsome profits at the cost of acute human suffering. The trafficked victims are left in a pitiable state. In the words of one victim, he is “just counting my days to die” while holding on to the hope that “the government will take care of my children.”

The half-hour documentary also highlights the efforts of government agencies, anti-trafficking organisations like The Forum For Protection Of People’s Rights and medical organisations to combat the trade. The Nepal government is issuing more stringent counter measures to prevent forgery of documents, hospitals are putting in place measures like DNA testing to prove the biological relationship between donors and recipients and anti-trafficking organisations are working hard to educate vulnerable villagers. While there is still a long journey ahead, activists express the hope that “if all the stakeholders contribute, this problem will be resolved.”
‘Nepal’s Organ Trail: A CNN Freedom Project Documentary’ airs on (Nepal Standard Time):
Monday, June 30 at 9:15AM and 2:15PM
Tuesday, July 1 at 10:15PM
Wednesday, July 2 at 11:00AM

BANGKOK, August 19, 2014 – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Rockefeller Foundation have announced a $100 million Global Resilience Partnership that lays out a bold new vision for building resilience to disasters, food insecurity, the effects of climate change and other factors contributing to poverty in communities across Asia and Africa.
Each year, hundreds of millions of people are struck by sudden shocks, such as typhoons, storms, floods, earthquakes and tsunamis that destroy lives and livelihoods in an instant. Equally destructive are the slower chronic stresses, like rising temperatures and changing weather and disease patterns, which affect workers, water and food supplies, sometimes to the point of crisis.
The poor suffer the greatest setbacks in these situations, as they often lack the ability or resources to protect their lives and possessions. This comes at a cost to all of society, as experts estimate that nearly one-third of all development investments are lost to disasters.
“Disasters have been increasing in Asia because more people are in harm’s way without the means to protect their loved ones and their possessions,” said Michael Yates, Director of the USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia. “To change this, we will build networks through this Partnership and solicit the best ideas from local government, the private sector and civil society, so that our collective investments will protect lives and livelihoods.”
The Global Resilience Partnership will focus on South and Southeast Asia, the Sahel and the Horn of Africa—areas particularly susceptible to disasters or crises of all kinds. The Partnership funds will play a catalytic role, encouraging others to take action. By building on the good work already underway, the Partnership will provide incentives for the best minds to come together to devise solutions that will help families, communities, countries and regions manage disaster and climate risk to build stronger and more resilient futures. The Partnership will support ideas that leverage information and technology to ultimately save lives and livelihoods, as well as resources for when they are needed most.
“Investing in building resilience means that we will minimize the impact when disaster hits, and expedite the rebound,” said Ashvin Dayal, Associate Vice President and Managing Director, Asia of The Rockefeller Foundation. “This will yield what we call a “resilience dividend” – the difference where a community is after a shock when resilience investments have been made, compared to where it would be without such investments.”
The need for the Resilience Partnership is clear: The combination of environmental degradation, population growth and urbanization, coupled with the impact of climate change means more and more people could be at risk of disaster in the future. In the last 30 years, the number of weather-related disasters has tripled, and the cost is up 300 percent to $200 billion every year. While low-income countries were hit by only 9 percent of these disasters, they represented 48 percent of all fatalities.
An essential feature of the Global Resilience Partnership will be a competitive Resilience Challenge—a competition to attract the best ideas in each of the three focus regions. The Challenge will launch later this year and be open to multi-disciplinary teams from non-profits, academic institutions, government and the private sector.

About The Rockefeller Foundation

For more than 100 years, The Rockefeller Foundation’s mission has been to promote the well-being of humanity throughout the world. Today, The Rockefeller Foundation pursues this mission through dual goals: advancing inclusive economies that expand opportunities for more broadly shared prosperity, and building resilience by helping people, communities and institutions prepare for, withstand, and emerge stronger from acute shocks and chronic stresses. To achieve these goals, The Rockefeller Foundation works at the intersection of four focus areas – advance health, revalue ecosystems, secure livelihoods, and transform cities – to address the root causes of emerging challenges and create systemic change. Together with partners and grantees, The Rockefeller Foundation strives to catalyze and scale transformative innovations, create unlikely partnerships that span sectors, and take risks others cannot – or will not. USAID’s Regional Development Mission for Asia is a regional office that implements programs and generates partnerships with government, civil society, private sector and regional institutions across 24 Asian nations to address critical development challenges in areas like the environment and natural resources management, disaster risk reduction and infectious diseases that cross national borders.
